Yet, even as the world invests great energy and courageous efforts in combating poverty, everyday violence and its devastating impact hasn’t really been part of the conversation. In fact, violence wasn’t even mentioned in the U.N.’s Millennium Development goals, which have served as the world’s compass for combating extreme poverty over the last 14 years. While the world is making encouraging strides in the fight against poverty, if we do not safeguard these efforts from the plague of everyday violence, that progress is at risk of stalling out.
