There are freedoms that have no downside. Freedom from ignorance, from the tyranny of bad ideologies and ideas, freedom from mistrust and insecurity, freedom from fear. These are unalloyed goods, and their possession by any one individual leaves as much and as good for any other. They have the nice property, as well, that nobody can possess them in isolation. They require a whole society and a whole tradition. We should all pursue freedom from whatever obstacles stand in their way.
